February 23, 2015

My Sam had his 6th birthday.
He has been so excited about his birthday. Like counting down the days since there were over 30 days. Like I got an email from his teacher about how excited he was about it. Like we have been talking about it daily since at least Halloween.
We decided not to do birthday parties like we usually do with the kids and all their friends.  Instead he got to pick something he wanted to do and pick one friend to come with him.  But of course we still decorated the kitchen for him and got him a cake to celebrate just for our family.
The first thing for his birthday happened the night before.  We told Sam that the basement would likely be don't by Christmas (ha ha ha) but if it wouldn't it would certainly be done by Sam's birthday.   Well it still is not done- but his room and Kate's room and the bathroom all were close.  So the Sunday before we finished moving the furniture downstairs so that he could sleep in his new room and wake up in his new room for his birthday.  I filled it with balloons like I always do when he was sleeping.   After I combed his hair he ran to the measuring stick and asked to measure himself since he was now six. He went to school in the morning, singing that he was six now as he left.  I showed up at school mid school morning with a donut for each one of his classmates that were decorated with basketballs.  And hung out with him for a second while his classmates sang him Happy Birthday.
When he got home he had a date with Grandma and Grandpa Anderson. They took him to Kolaches for lunch and then to the store to pick out a gift.  He came home with an fire airplane he was really excited about.  He played it and helped me set up while we waited for Kate to come home from school.  Dad came about then too.
Sam then picked to open his presents first.  He was so excited about presents.  He received two soccer goals, a Lego video game, a  soccer trainer, an erector set and a basketball.  And he loved each and ever one.  Saying things like " how did you know this is what I always wanted" and " You and Dad give the best gifts ever"  Then we opened all the gifts up.  Next we did his cake.  I ordered his cake form a bakery in town.  And he loved it.  A basketball with guys on top he kept to play with.  The way Sam looks at his birthday cake in perfect contentment as everyone sings him Happy Birthday is the most true smile I see from him every year.  We remarked that it was his third birthday cake that he had eaten in this house.  We went around the table and everyone said why they liked Sam.  Which included that he was a good friend, that he is helpful, a hard worker, kind,  a deep soul, happy and content, kind etc etc. We can't say enough good things about our handsome boy Sam.
Next we set up the soccer goals in the basement and played soccer all together.  Which was really fun for everyone.  Then he tried out his new video game.  While I went and got him a Hamburger from Wendy's because that is what he wanted and it was his birthday.  Then we got ready for the JAZZ game.  Grandma came and watched Beth so we could stay out late.  Jake, Mari, Kate Sam, myself and Sam's friend Jackson came with us to the game.  The kids were all kind of giddy on the way down.  Sam and I had bought glow sticks and foam fingers at the store before hand and he was really excited about them- and also the free hot dog our tickets came with because I bought a family night deal.   Sam loved the game!  He loved it.  He literally cheered the entire time saying "GO Jazz" or "Defence" and said things like "This is the most AWESOME GAME EVER!"  "This is the best day EVER" and everything else you want your boy to say on his very special sixth birthday.  On the way home he and Jackson danced with their glow sticks in the dark car talking about the game.   We came home exhausted but content.
Because it was the best day ever for him it was the best day ever for me.  I love that little guy of mine.  He really is a special boy who is loved beyond words by each of us.
