April 9, 2015

Yesterday was spent celebrating Kate.
I say this every year, but she spent the better part of the year planning her birthday.
Even though this year we are not having friend parties.
She went through several theme ideas before settling on Lisa Frank- which is kind of an 80's rainbow theme. She had a coloring book and sticker set of it.
It is not a very popular thing, let alone party theme, but we worked on it together to make it her vision. We ordered a cake at the local bakery and I think they thought we were crazy.  We were like "just put a bunch rainbow peace signs and hearts and tie dye."  Then at the party store Kate went a little crazy and bought everything nearly close.  She mismatched all the place settings and found a sign that said "i love the 80's" to which she decided we would cut of the 0 so it read" I love the 8" instead.  Since she was turning 8.  Her anticipation didn't stop with decor either.  It was so much talk and excitement about her birthday.  She was also excited about no chores on your birthday too.  and staying up as late as you want.

The night before we filled her room with pink balloons as is our tradition so she would wake up to a party.  I noticed she had laid out her clothing for the next day- and of course it was her best effort at matching her party theme.

The day finally came!  Before I was even awake she was dressing Sam and Mari in coordinating outfits to match her party. Before Dad went to work for a bit she got to open one present.  Which was the soundtrack to the new Annie movie.  She had been watching it on repeat for days before reenacting and singing the musical numbers (she is so into acting since her play) that it was a last minute thought of gift and maybe one of her favorite things.  She spent the morning organizing her siblings into Ms. Hannigans Foster Kids singing "its a hard knock life" in her room complete with dance moves.

Next we had to go pick up the cake.  And she stood in disbelief- and so did I because it was so perfectly what she had wanted.... well her first choice had been a tie dye leopard, but I told them they couldn't do that so she picked this.  She couldn't believe it!

Then we grabbed corn dogs for lunch (her choice and went to play at the park)
After that we decorated the house for her party.  It include rainbow pin wheels, zebra balloons, confetti, pictures from a coloring book she colored and wanted to hang as posters, rainbow peace signs hanging everywhere.  Then all our beanie baby collection lined up... she was pretty sure she was getting more because that is all she really wanted.

Then we put Mari and Beth down for a nap, Sam played nintendo while we did a pedicure. Kate had mentioned wanting to do a spa day for her activity for the day but that it wasn't fair to pick that to her siblings. so thoughtful. So we did it ourselves.  Gel toes in pink for her and nails in rainbow colors.

Next we watched Annie.... again.  She is obsessed

At 3:30 Jake came home and the real party began.  She opened all her gifts.  She loved everything, She got tons of books, Shel Silverstein and Rohld Dahl.  She got a car for her Calico Critters she has been wanting.  And she Got Beanie Babies, in all sizes including the biggest one any of us have ever seen- a giant owl.

Then it was cake time.   We sat around cake sharing what we love most about cake.  Her siblings love her when she is nice and play with them.  Jake and I mention how bright and happy she is, what a good example she is to her younger siblings, how she is affectionate and thoughtful, and how she makes us proud.

Next was an outing.  Kate was allowed to invite a friend to this part but chose not too.  Which I think is more thoughtfulness on her part, I think she didn't want to invite anyone because it would be saying she liked them best and possibly hurting all the other girls.

She had picked Chuckie Cheese, but at the last day changed to Build a Bear- which I was grateful for.  Build a Bear it was.  Everyone made a bear and it was so much fun.  Kate picked out a rainbow tie dye rabbit she named Rainbow Ruby- because it all went with the theme.  Sam a Captain America Bear, Marianne and heart bear and Beth a silly pink monkey. The whole time she was dragging it around saying "my monkey, my monkey"

Next up chineese dinner at PF Changs.  I thought Kate would like the fanciness of it.  She really only like the big horses in front.  The kids all tried out chop sticks.

Then we headed home.  Everyone else went to bed except Kate who stayed up reading new books cuddling with new stuffed animals in her bed until about 11:00 pm where I found her with her nose in a book asleep.

I hope it was a great day for her, she deserves it so much.  She is such a great girl who tries to hard to please and be helpful and kind to all her siblings.  I'm sure by tomorrow she will already be planning for nine!

Lucky for Kate she gets another party in a few weeks when she gets baptized.
