4th of July 2011

We had a great 4th of July weekend around here.
Here is everyone on Sunday in their festive best.
On Monday we went to the Freedom Parade in Provo. The kids loved it. Sam especially. He clapped and would not get out of the full sun to sit in the shade with us because he wanted to be that much closer. We met up with some of Jake's cousins there- then joined them for lunch. Lucky us.
After lunch we were worn out. We headed home were most of us took naps. Then we BBQ'ed hot dogs for dinner. Jake's parents came into town and we visited with them and watched fireworks as best we could from the front porch. We had let Kate do some sparklers already earlier that week, but she of course had her own knowledge of what a firework was, and since it was not in the sky, nor rainbow colors it did not count for her. She was satisfied by the one we saw that night though.
We were lucky enough to have Jake's parents and sister and her family for Tuesday around our house too.
Do we have to go back to non holiday normal life already today?

Celebrating Father's Day with a Train Ride

We decided to celebrate Father's Day on Saturday with a ride on the Heber Valley Railroad and dinner out. The kids couldn't have been happier about it. We went and bought the tickets the day before and all they could talk about was going on the train and having their tickets. As we arrived Sam started shouting "All Aboard" with his hand up to his mouth. I'm not sure where he learned this trick, but it was encouraged repeatedly. The ride was only 1.5 hours long, which was plenty long enough for us all. We enjoyed seeing the place we live through the eyes of a tourist.
The kids covered their ears every time the train horn went off, happily put their hands high in the air when "bank robbers" high jacked the train, and said "choo choo" about a million times. Then they spent a good thirty minutes making friends with some Indian tourists sitting behind us. It was a fun family outing.

The kids also went ahead and picked out their own gifts for their Dad.
Sam picked out two tools, and couldn't stop talking about them so we had to give them to Jake a few days early. Since Jake already has every tool under the sun, Sam got him a hammer and he and Kate painted it together. Kate had originally planned to get him some batteries for his phone to never run out of batteries which I thought was a great idea ,but then at the store she changed her mind and got him a lollipop and some spider poison stating it was Dad's job to kill all the spiders. I of course gifted some more real gifts, but seeing what the kids come up with is always so fun.

How lucky we are to have Jake as a husband and father! He really is the best.

Jake is 32!

Jake is celebrating his 32 birthday today.
Well really all week in small pieces.
I think he would agree it has been one of the best years of the 32.
I would comment that that is because we spent more time together as a family than was ever possible before.
Happily because Jake's working from home plan is working out so well.

Sadly his office was looking like this.
It had become the temporary storage while we refinished the basement starting back in November.
With us still working on (but very close to finishing) the rest of the basement I couldn't let him work in this disaster any longer.
What is that- a microwave? our christmas decorations, furniture with no place?
Oh and flat white primer on the walls.
I think his computer is somewhere around here!
How was he even running a successful business out of this hole?
For his birthday we surprised him and sent him away for the day.
We 1st had to clean out everything, then the walls got real paint.
New furniture and accessories, a CD player and a selection of books on tape finished the room off.
Now when he meets with clients, they won't have to sit on the old microwave.
It is a much better arrangement.
Since then sometimes I sneak down in the middle of the day just to sit in the cleanest, prettiest room in our house.
We had a cake and some presents the kids picked out for him too.
When the kids pick out presents for you it is the best.
A Thomas the Train card- a nerf ball and a squirt gun.
Yesterday for his birthday I planned a date for just the two of us.
Forgive the horrible pictures- they were taken with my video camera.
Just the two of us haven't been on a date other than a quick trip to buy Christmas gifts in secret since, I'm going to go with October. How pathetic.
We decided to try Joe's Crab Shack for dinner. Not only had we never eaten here- we also basically got free parking for the soccer game later because it is across the street. Jake and I always say we don't eat seafood. We don't. That is because we think we don't like it. That is because we both got really bad food poisoning from it years ago.
Turns out we really do like shrimp and crab legs though on special occasion.
Whole buckets full of them.
Really we haven't decided if we like the food so much because of what it was, or because it is the 1st meal we have eaten without our children in several months.
Either way- I am already planning on eating my weight in crab legs when we go to the coast in April.

Jake and I at the Real SL game.
It was our 1st time at the new stadium and it was so much fun. They have crazy fans, and it was a full house. It only rained on us a bit too though the forecast had predicted lots of snow. They played LA Galaxy- with some of the best players in the league- but Real pulled out an easy victory. Our tickets were front and center too so we didn't miss a thing. Well except for when I went to get us churros and the line was like twenty minutes long.

All in all, I am so glad it was Jake's birthday.
It was so much fun to spent time just the two of us doing new and different things.
Its not like I can forget how awesome Jake is.
He gives me small reminders every day of his awesomeness.
Like when he gets up with the kids and makes them blueberry pancakes.
or when we comes upstairs from work to change a diaper because I am sure it will make my pregnant self vomit.
Or how every night we watch a little tv before going to bed, and he laughs out loud, and it makes me laugh too.
Or how he feeds my dog every night because I am tired and don't want to go out in the cold.
No, I don't need to be reminded of how awesome he is,
but spending all evening just the two of us made it just that much more clear.

'Tis the Season

Kate played Mary in her preschool production of the 1st Christmas. She was so good, and right on as the scripture was read, she brought forth her child out of her robe which surprised me, and laid it in the manger and folder her arms in prayer. She loved it.
Kate assembled this nativity scene this week. It is hilarious, and sweet. I am not sure sebatian from the little mremaid was at the 1st Christmas but the idea is nice.
We took the kids to see Santa tonight. I think they had a bit of trouble recognizing him because he wasn't wearing all red, or a hat. They were not afraid of him and ran straight to him. We don't have pictures because they would not let you take pictures- only purchase one for $16.00.

Eating at the Old Spaghetti Factory after seeing Santa.
Our kids eat noodles.
We ended the night letting the kids pick out gifts for each other and us. On our way our of the mall Kate saw a jewelry store. She exclaimed "Is that the Diamond Store" When her suspision was confirmed she said we should buy mom a diamond ring for Christmas. Good idea Kate, I think she ended up picking me out some chapstick though.
After picking a present for each person in the family and Cola, we returned home and she excitedly wrapped them.

Lots of Christmas fun and more to come.

One Year.

One year ago we committed to being self employed.
It is our one year anniversary of being on our own.
We are celebrating!

We had big plans to take ourselves on a trip to Cancun.
But you know how we are about never actually doing things like that.
Instead we have an afternoon date with the kids, to see Santa, go to dinner and let them pick out a gift for one another.
It will be fun, and funny and a perfect representation of what the entire year has been like.

I can remember the day well. The 1st day Jake didn't "go" to work.
I'll admit, although I had all the faith in the world that my husband could do it, it seemed insane to leave a paying job as an attorney with benefits for the unknown world in this economy.
We had lived a simple life on only a few hundred dollars a month our 1st year of marriage, but that seemed like a different life, one where we didn't have two small children relying on us and our mortgage was 10 times less. The only thing that kept me confident was that we had saved 6 months of expenses and I thought it we really scrimped we could likely make it to 9 months on it. It was without question the most stress we had been under in our entire marriage. And it was Christmas. We had already purchase over the last few months quite the plush Christmas for our little family. I remember I considered taking back all the presents before they were opened and replacing them with smaller, less expensive items from the Dollar Store. After all the children would not have known any different. I didn't but in retrospect maybe I should have.
We quickly learned what a volatile world being self employed was.

Jake started his internet advertising company about one year out of law school (2007). It didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary. He is the king of everything, in case you didn't know. He had been into stocks and day trading a bit though law school, and it just seemed like another one of these things that would be more fun and small profit.
Our 1st goal had been to make $30 a day with it. It was a means to paying off our law school loans faster.
Then.
It grew and grew.

In the fall of 2009 we realized that the internet business had grown enough it might be able to support us completely. We started talking almost every night as we would fall asleep, every dinner time, every drive in the car, about how we could make it happen.

It meant insecurity- but we decided that no job was really that secure in 2009.
It meant private health insurance- which no matter how much you pay is horrible.
It meant cutting back and saving more- but we can never spend our money anyway.
It also meant freedom.
Freedom to go on vacation when ever we wanted.
Freedom to arrange our days how we wanted.
It meant that we could be at home together, all together, while our children were still home.
It meant Jake would turn his hobby into work, and who doesn't want to get paid to do their hobby?
So we went for it.

One year later, we are confident we made the right choice.
Jake managed to earn 30% more than he did working at the law firm alone.
With about 21 more vacation days, shorter work days, and too many mid afternoon play dates with his family.
And the firm he might still have been working for has almost collapsed, with most of his old co- workers being forced to leave for more work elsewhere.

One surprise is that he has been able to work as an attorney still and works for somebody in town about 10 hours a week too. It does still interest him, keeps doors open for the future, and makes all that schooling not seem to irrelevant.

Not surprising is how many people have asked Jake to show them how to make a living from home. It is not as easy as he makes it seem. It was almost a year- working two to six hours a night before he was making anything worth taking to the bank, and we put up thousands of dollars month after month to grow our company.

Another surprise is how much the flexibility has made it easier to serve in our callings and ward. Without the flexibility I don't know how we would manage two time consuming callings and two small children.
What surprises me most it how well I have adjusted to the ups and downs. And how little it all stresses me out on a daily bases now. It has helped me have more faith... in many things.

Not surprising we compliment each other well when making decisions and analyzing how things are going with the business. Jake does 97% of the work of course. But I spend a few hours a week doing the accounting, billing, and taxes. Jake- although he thinks he is being realistic, is completely overly optimistic. It works well when combined with my critical realism. Turns out sometimes a spouse is the perfect business partner.

Before we married, we talked about some things we wanted that we felt would make our family stronger. One of those things included not having more than a 10 minute commute. We said it was important to work were we lived, for our family and our community. "Work were we live". We laugh at this now, we didn't know how literally we would meet this goal. We only hope we can meet all of our goals this literally.

Of course the internet is always changing. We hope to be able to change with it and live this life for ever. Things are going better than almost ever, and we even hired our 1st employee this month so we fully intent to.

But if in the future, we have to return to the normal life, of day jobs, bosses, and pay stubs, we will always remember what a blessing this golden year all together with our young children has been.
It has been without a doubt our favorite year ever.
We are so grateful to our Heavenly Father for blessing us in this incredible way.

I joke that He knows Jake is the better parent and has helped to make this work for us to our children can learn from their better parent more. I joke. But I am dead serious.

Here is to one year.
And many more exactly like it to follow.

Old Stuff

I found these picture going through some old stuff today.
These made me laugh and cry and fall in love all over again with Jake.
And see that maybe Sam doesn't get his good looks from me after all.
I didn't know Jake when he was 12 years old. But seeing this makes me pretty sure I would have totally had a crush on him.

Costume Details You May Have Missed.

Halloween 1/2 Marathon

Congrats to Jake who ran his 1st 1/2 marathon today.
We had so much fun cheering him on.
This is him about 1/4 mile from the finish.

Pumpkins for FHE

For family night tonight we went and got pumpkins to carve- then carved them. Despite all my plans to trek the family out to a real pumpkin patch with the snow, and it getting late, we ended up just getting them at Smith's. I figure I can't feel too bad since I already took them to the pumpkin patch this year, we just didn't have time for pumpkins because we were doing all the other things. They were pretty excited to pick out pumpkins from the Smith's sidewalk. Kate immediately found the biggest pumpkin, but then settled for a slightly smaller pumpkin because she didn't like the green on the original one. Sam said his best "pumpkin" as we searched for and purchased our pumpkins.

Kate begins to draw the face on her pumpkin for carving. And models the face she is trying to make.

Sam works on carving his pumpkin.
The guts didn't phase her.
Our kids constantly wear hats, around the house, out, in the summer, in the winter. They don't care they just love to accessorize.
Kate and Jake working on a pumpkin together.

Sam and I working on a pumpkin together.
This is the face Kate drew for her and Jake to carve out. Pretty detailed. I am not sure how those eyelashes are going to work out, or those nostrils, all I know is my Kate is a regular Picasso with a sharpie.

After the carving the kids wanted to draw on their pumpkins some more.

Kate is pleased with her pumpkin.

Sam did not want to leave his pumpkin friend out in the cold He lugged it back through the door. When I took it from him and placed it back outside and brought him in - he turned on his full on cry.
